I know very long name … how do you say it? The good news is that it is phonetically correct! Each word is pronounced just as it is spelled. So, it’s actually very simple, if you just take a minute and look at it! I live on an acreage between Birch Hills and St. Louis, Saskatchewan, Canada. I just love being in the country – the quietness and solitude of being in the country brings me a calm and peaceful feeling. Looking at the sun set in the west, the sun rise in the east and the greenness of grass and trees around me makes me feel grateful for where I live and what I have. I have loved baking since a young age and as time progressed enjoyed working with risen doughs immensely. The feeling of nice soft dough working beneath your hands just takes your mind off life. A great stress reliever. In my earlier years I ran a small restaurant in Birch Hills called the Mini-Munch; this was where I really developed a skill for breads, buns, and homemade soup.

Everyday there was a fresh batch of bread being baked by 7 am – and that smell would just entice people to come in and have a cup of coffee and a goodie. Sandwiches at lunch time on fresh baked bread was a big hit. From there I moved on to catering and my husband, Ralph and my 3 kids would help me with that as well. We catered small functions with good quality food. Eventually I started working full time and my baking skills were mainly for my own family. They always had a homemade bun in their lunch with homemade cookies, Butterhorns or Curry hamburger buns, plus many other delightful morsels to take. As time has passed, I decided I wanted to share my skill of baking with others; thus the website, the cookbook, “A Baker’s Dozen”, now available in hard copy or PDF. I love being able to share my recipes and my stories to all of you out there. If I had my way I would spend my days baking, gardening and tending to my flowers!

Bake Bread With Me!

Do you wish you knew how to make just one loaf of bread? Gramma’s recipe has 20 cups of flour and 8 cups of liquid in it. How do I mix something like this up? I just want to make one loaf of bread. Then you have come to the right place. I have spent a lot of time coming up with just a one loaf recipe. Easy to mix, easy to handle and it lets you feel the dough and with practice you will be able to recognize when you have enough flour mixed into the dough. And the versatility of making a small dough recipe. Pizza, bread, fried bread (scones), buns, pizza buns, bread sticks, cinnamon sticks, the list goes on – use your imagination. And as you become better triple the recipe and make 3 loaves.

 One Happy Baker:

“I have known Merle Lee Ann for my whole life, and when I saw that she was offering baking classes I was so excited to try them out! I got 3 of my girlfriends together and we went to Birch Hills for an afternoon of baking, wine and lots of laughs and visiting. We learned how to make buns and breadsticks. Before my grandma passed away she taught me many things in the kitchen, unfortunately learning to make buns was not one of them. When I discovered this opportunity I knew I had to jump on it! Merle Lee Ann showed us the processes, step by step, allowing each of us to take an active role. In the end, we came out with amazing buns and breadsticks! I still use this recipe today - and my husband still comments this was the best class I have ever taken! We will be back! What a fun day for a bunch of girlfriends to enjoy!”

Order my book! A Baker’s Dozen

Why a Baker’s Dozen? Well, when I researched the meaning of a baker’s dozen here is what I found. A baker's dozen is thirteen of something. ... In fact, baking is the origin of baker's dozen — since the sixteenth century, the term has been used to talk about the longstanding custom of bakers adding an extra loaf or muffin or bagel to a customer's order of a dozen.

And my book has 13 recipes with 13 stories. And the lucky 13 story is a good read with an exceptionally good laugh. And as we know laughter is the gift of life. This cookbook was created to bring great recipes to your kitchen and laughter as well. Even today as I am baking loaves of bread to sell to my neighbours I always make sure they get the full 650 gram loaf of bread, maybe some muffins if I have baked them that morning. The little bit of extra dough that makes a small loaf. A sample of fresh homemade jam. Something. A “baker’s dozen” is a great term. And generally in life – go the extra mile, make somebody’s day a little extra special, just be nice, we are all equal – be kind!
